When Ronald Koeman was first announced as the new Everton gaffer, too many people expected a quick fix and for the team to immediately start challenging for European and Champions League spots. Nope. What Everton have is an aging squad (literally the oldest squad in the league) and a false belief that it is their best set of players since the 80’s – a ridiculous idea that was implanted by the previous boss Roberto Martinez. Once fans realise that this is a rebuilding job, then the future for the Blues will come into focus.

It is not just the age of the squad that is concerning, there is too much dead wood taking up wage bills. Kone, Gibson, Cleverly and Oviedo are just a few names that spring to mind and as harsh as it may be, they just really shouldn’t be at the club anymore. Gibson is about as tough as a pane of sugar glass, Cleverly…well..it’s Cleverly, Oviedo sadly isn’t the same as he was before he broke his leg and Kone is in the same situation as Jagielka and Barry – they’re too old.tom-cleverly-tom-cleverley-everton_3342566

It’s no longer time for sentiment, it’s time for some ruthlessness and from what I know about Ronald Koeman, ruthlessness is what you’re going to get.

Like a Chiropractor, Koeman must first focus on the spine.

  • In terms of Goalkeepers at Everton, neither Joel or Stek should cut it as their no.1 as both are average and should only be considered as a back up.
  • Whilst Ashley Williams has been brought in to strengthen the back line, something still isn’t right. Whether it’s the lack of pace, Funes Mori constantly getting caught ball-watching or Phil Jagielka’s age catching up to him  it’s clear some youthful quality has to be brought in. If the rumours are to be believed that an approach has been made for Roma defender Kostas Manolas, it is certainly a step in the right direction.
  • Now, midfield. The morgan-schneiderlin-maintransfer of Morgan Schneiderlin from Manchester United looks to be a done deal with a medical being passed on friday and this will be a quality signing. Koeman knows what he is getting with Morgan having worked with him during his time at Southampton and he should provide the solidity desperately needed in the centre of the park. With already having found a gem in Idrissa Gana Gueye and having some brilliant talent such as Tom Davis making first team breakthroughs, the midfield is looking positive.
  • Lukaku needs a back-up and even though Enner Valencia has impressed since joining on loan from struggling West Ham, I don’t think he is the answer. It is slightly worrying to see the Toffee’s being linked with players like Gabbiadini who, in all honesty, is crap. Tlacazetteo go for players that can’t break into their starting eleven is embarrassing, they should be aiming higher for the likes of Lacazette, Mertens and even James Rodriguez.  Money talks and apparently Everton now have a lot of it so they have to dust off that checkbook and get to it.

Fans must be patient. There is definitely silverware in Koemans future at Everton as long as the board and the fans back him. Look at Liverpool, Klopp didn’t have a great first season but after making some of his own signings and getting the team to play how he wants, they’ve become unstoppable…well except against Plymouth..

I know the fans have waited long enough for some Silverware, but Koeman must be given enough time to make the change.
